First-Time Less-Lethal Buyer Guide

Buying less-lethal equipment for the first time can be confusing. This guide explains how to start with the launcher platform, confirm projectiles, choose the right air source, plan storage, and avoid incomplete or mismatched setups.

Start With The Full Setup, Not Just The Launcher

For a first-time less-lethal buyer, the launcher is usually the first product that gets attention. It is also the easiest product to buy without realizing what else may be required. A complete setup can include compatible projectiles, magazines, CO2 cartridges, HPA tanks, regulators, storage, protective gear, maintenance parts, and platform-specific accessories.

Detroit Less Lethal recommends starting with compatibility first. Before ordering, confirm the exact launcher platform and then build the supporting equipment list around that platform.

Understand What Less-Lethal Means

Less-lethal equipment is designed to reduce the likelihood of a lethal outcome compared with traditional lethal force options. It does not mean harmless, risk-free, or appropriate for every situation.

Customers are responsible for lawful use, safe handling, secure storage, proper training, and review of manufacturer instructions, site rules, agency policies, and applicable laws.

Step 1: Choose A Launcher Platform

The launcher platform determines many of the other buying decisions. Different launchers may use different projectile sizes, magazine systems, shells, air sources, seals, fittings, and maintenance parts.

Before choosing a launcher, review what the product includes and what must be ordered separately. Some launchers may include a magazine or starter accessories, while others may require additional items before the setup is complete.

Step 2: Confirm Projectile Compatibility

Projectiles are not universal. Caliber, shape, shell style, magazine fit, and manufacturer approval all matter. A projectile that looks close in size may still be wrong for a specific launcher or magazine.

First-time buyers should avoid ordering large projectile quantities until the launcher platform, magazine type, and air source are confirmed.

Step 3: Review Magazine And Loading Needs

Many less-lethal setups require platform-specific magazines, shells, loaders, or feeding accessories. Spare magazines can be useful, but only when they match the launcher and projectile type.

Check whether the launcher includes a magazine, whether spare magazines are available, and whether the selected projectiles are approved for that magazine or shell system.

Step 4: Choose The Correct Air Source

Less-lethal platforms may use CO2 cartridges, HPA tanks, regulators, remote lines, or platform-specific air systems. These parts are not always interchangeable.

Before checkout, confirm the required air source, cartridge size, tank output pressure, regulator type, fitting type, and whether spare seals or other air accessories are recommended.

Step 5: Plan Storage And Organization

A responsible first setup should include a storage plan. Cases, labels, storage trays, lockable storage, and separated compartments can help keep launchers, projectiles, magazines, air parts, tools, and maintenance items organized.

Clear storage helps prevent wrong projectiles, wrong magazines, or unsupported air parts from being paired with the wrong platform.

Step 6: Add Protective And Maintenance Gear

Depending on the training environment and platform, customers may need protective eyewear, face protection, gloves, cleaning supplies, lubricant, O-rings, seals, tools, or replacement parts.

Maintenance needs vary by platform. Follow the product page and manufacturer instructions instead of guessing or using unapproved parts.

First-Time Buyer Checklist

Before placing a first less-lethal equipment order, review these questions:

  • Which exact launcher platform are you buying?
  • What does the launcher include in the box?
  • Which projectiles are confirmed compatible?
  • Are spare magazines, shells, or loading accessories needed?
  • Does the platform require CO2, HPA, or another air source?
  • Are tanks, regulators, cartridges, fittings, and seals compatible?
  • Do you have a secure storage and transport plan?
  • Do you need protective gear for training or handling?
  • Are maintenance items recommended for the platform?
  • Have manufacturer instructions, applicable laws, and site rules been reviewed?

Common First-Time Buying Mistakes

The most common first-time mistakes are buying the launcher without the required supporting gear, ordering the wrong projectiles, choosing incompatible magazines, assuming CO2 and HPA parts are universal, or skipping storage and maintenance planning.

These issues are easier to prevent before checkout than after the order arrives.

Ask Before Ordering

If you are unsure whether a launcher, projectile, magazine, air source, case, or maintenance part fits your setup, contact Detroit Less Lethal before ordering.

A quick compatibility review can help prevent incomplete setups, mismatched parts, unsupported accessories, and unnecessary returns.
